Begin a Retail Career at Your Local Walmart Store

Walmart is the largest retailer in the world. If you're looking for employment in the retail industry, there's no better place to start than Walmart. From entry-level work in stores to careers in distribution centers and corporate offices, Walmart has more work options than any other employer.
Job opportunities at Walmart stores:
  • Greeter - The primary responsibility of a greeter is to welcome customers into the store. Greeters may also have to answer questions, find carts, and provide other services to store patrons. The average greeter makes just above minimum wage, or about $8 an hour.
  • Cashier - Like any cashier working in retail, a cashier at Walmart checks out customers, answers any questions store patrons may have, and may provide other services like processing returns. This employee will have to operate a cash register. The average Walmart cashier starts out at just above minimum wage.
  • Sales associate - A sales associate will work in a specific department, providing customer service and answering questions about merchandise, prices, and product location. This kind of worker may also be responsible for stocking merchandise and keeping inventory. A sales associate will typically begin making just above minimum wage, or around $8 an hour. Associates who excel in this area will potentially be promoted to department manager or another managerial role.
  • Management - Walmart stores have a variety of departments, creating a need for a large management network. Department managers oversee operations in individual departments, while assistant store managers and store managers supervise all of the goings-on at a given store. Retail managers may provide customer service, but will normally be busy with administrative tasks such as interviewing, hiring, firing, training new employees, making the schedule, and communicating with corporate offices. A typical manager at Walmart will be full-time and salaried, earning $30,000 to $60,000 per year.
Since Walmart stores are so comprehensive, there are even positions available in specialty departments, like the pharmacy or eye care center. Job openings exist for pharmacy technicians and optometrists at Walmart locations all over the country. These opportunities may require more training and experience than other positions in stores, but compensation will be proportionate and rather generous.
All full-time associates are eligible for an impressive benefits package on top of great base pay. Qualified workers receive full healthcare coverage, disability insurance, stock options, a retirement plan, and paid time off. All employees are also able to take advantage of a merchandise discount obtainable in all Walmart stores. Apply online for Walmart jobs in your area.
